pg 232-233
#1-5 All, #6-33 multiples of 3
hw #5-6
Practice #5-6 distributed in class
Reminder, the back of the worksheet is a "modest" unit review
Yes. I also had a problem on #'s 19-24, but your explanation helped until I got to #'s 23 & 24. For 23 I got 380 because I did .25x=95 then divided 95 by .25 and got 380. For 24 I did 10x=64.49 I divided 64.49 by. 10 and got 644.9. Please help. -Maggie
i do not get 19 - 24 on the sheet
ReplyDeleteIt might be how you are interpreting the question... look at #19 this way:
ReplyDeleteThe new selling price is $55
The markup was 20%
What was the original selling price?
We don't know the original selling price... so let's call it 'x', ok?
So, what happened? We marked up x by 20%
We could define the selling price a few ways:
a) x + .20(x)
b) 1.2(x)
c) 120% of x
So how about the equation:
1.2x = 55
Can you solve that equation? I'll even let you use a calculator!
Ca-peesh?
Answer: The original selling price was $45.83
Can you do 20-24 now??
I don't get how to estimate #9 on the review part of the sheet.

I'll take you through a couple of sample "estimation" problems
ReplyDelete47% of 913
Well 47% is close to 50%, yes?
and 913 is close to 900, yes?
so if I took 50% of 900, that would be close, right?
So 450 would be a pretty good estimate.
34% of 12,237
34% is pretty close to 1/3, right
1/3 of 12,000 is 4,000, right?
1/3 of 240 is 80 right?
so 4,080 is a pretty good estimate, yes?
does that help?

Nevermind I found my mistake. I didn't put 1.25 or 1.10 because one is the whole I get it now. Now my answers don't look so funky
