  2. Jessica added 120 to one-third of a number for a result of 200. What is the number?

    OK, let's talk it out.

    Do you know the number?
Of course not, that's why it's a problem.
So let's call the number 'n'

Now you try to set up an equation and I'll be back.

  3. Oh HAHA. I got the same thing wrong and we probably did the same thing! I will begin by showing the correct way to answer the problem, and then you can write back what you did and we can see what you did wrong.

Jessica added 120, to 1/3 of a number for a result of 200. What is the number?

First you should set up an equation:
    120 + 1/3 x = 200

next you should take care of the constant(s)
    120 + 1/3x = 200
    -120 -120
    Gives you
    x 1/3 = 80

This is where you might have messed up, just as I did:

What you probably did is multiply by 0.33

What you should have done, is multiply by BOTH SIDES 3, so the annoying denominator goes away.
    That leaves you with
    x1 or x = 80(3)
    so x = 240

  4. Oooops! I'm sorry Mr. Chamberlain. I was typing my response while you posted yours.

  5. I did problem #14 on the homework, but I can't get the check step. And I'm having trouble on #16.

  7. What are your first steps in #14 & #16?

  8. fyi, we will review the word problems in class on Weds, too!

  10. I got #14, I wasn't thinking correctly.
The first step for #16 would be 3x-3= -3-3x, then add 3x to both sides. I got 6x-3= -3, then I added 3 to both sides and got 6x=0.

  11. Hi Luke,

We'll definitely go over those in class tomorrow.

Looks like you are having trouble with something like

    a) 10-(-4x+3) than with

    b) 10-2(-4x+3)

I think it's because you don't SEE a coefficient. You can look a) a different way...

    10-1(-4x+3)

Now, you SEE the coefficient of -1.

Let me know if that helps.

    Mr. C.

  12. Hi Maggie,

    Ok, so now you have

    6x=0

just divide both sides by 6 and...

    x=0

    right?

  13. Mr. chamberlain i am having trouble getting the sign changes like if the problem has a - and the answer somehow pulls a + out of nowhere. If u could explain that to me it would help thanks

    ReplyDelete
  14. Could you post a sample problem... nothing comes from nowhere... the math gods won't hear of it!

    ReplyDelete
  15. like in the pre-test sheet theres a problem #5 and it says -2(1-9x)+4x and when you go through it it ends up -2(1) – 2(9x) + 4x and then -2 + 18x + 4x the first plus sign wasn't even in the equation where did it come from?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Well, here is where we use some of knowledge of mathematical properties. (I know that you know that) the Additive Inverse property allows us to re-write subtraction as addition by ADDING THE OPPOSITE. So let's invoke the property:

    -2(1-9x)+4x ... becomes
    -2(1+(-9x))+4x ... do you agree?
    ... next, we'll distribute the -2
    -2(1) + (-2)(-9x) + 4x ... right??
    -2 + 18x + 4x .... then CombLikeTerms
    -2 + 22x

    Ca-peesh??

  17. ok thanks ca-peesh!

  18. I have a question about problem 24 To what decimal place should we round the cost to rent a video game for Kyle

    ReplyDelete
  19. First off, I'm little surprised that the problem requires rounding...

If it does... well, to what number of decimal points can Kyle pay? Does that help?

    problem 24 where?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sorry I wasn't specific on the test problem 24 I rounded to the nearest hundredth.Maybe I didn't do the problem right. My answer was It cost 2.81 to rent a video game.

    Kyle

  21. Here is the problem:

At video shack, movie rentals cost $3.75 each. The cost of three movie rentals and one video game is $0.55 less than the cost of five video game rentals. How much does it cost to rent a single video game?

How did you define the unknown variable?
    What was your starting equation?

    ReplyDelete
  22. My equation was 3.75 x 3 + v=5v-0.55

    ReplyDelete
  23. NEVER USE A MULTIPLICATION 'x'... even when blogging!!

    I'll re-state your equation as 3(3.75)+v=5v-0.55

That's a good start... what did you do next?

(ps - your solution of 2.81 was wrong)
